Frequently Asked Questions

Bullet What is All Aboard for Kindergarten?

All Aboard for Kindergarten is a literacy initiative aimed at Kindergarten children and their families. Information is given out soon after school starts to all kindergarteners living in FVRL's 14 member municipalities via their teachers.

Bullet What do kindergarteners get?

Kindergarten children and their parents will receive a special Literacy Train foldout poster that includes:

  • Literacy information and ideas for parents
  • Invitation to join the library

Bullet What if my kindergartener did not receive a Literacy Train or is home schooled?

Home schoolers, or any kindergarten child who has not received the All Aboard for Kindergarten Literacy Train should contact their local library.

Bullet My kindergartener has a Literacy Train. Now what?

Once kindergarten children have received their information, they should visit their local library with their invitation to receive a new library card. They will also receive a special All Aboard for Kindergarten lanyard and cardholder. As they visit the library they can check out the 100 Books, and enter to win prizes. This year, for the first time ever, there will also be a grand prize draw for families who finish all 100 Books to Read in Kindergarten!

Bullet What if my child already has a library card?

If your kindergarten child already has a card, show it at your library for a free lanyard and a chance to win prizes.

Bullet Are there any other events at the libraries?

Yes. Each local library offers various programs for members of All Aboard for Kindergarten, and other school-age children. These programs can include hands-on fun activities, storytimes or performances. Contact your local library to find out dates of special programs in your area.

Bullet As a parent, is there anything else I can do to get my child ready to read?

  • The single most important activity in helping your kindergarten child get ready to read is reading aloud.
  • Read! If you think reading is important, so will your child.
  • Seize every opportunity to read and use language. Talk about stories, sing songs and play rhyming word games.
  • Get your child a free FVRL public library card.
  • Regular visits to the library give you and your child access to thousands of books.
  • Get excited about books and stories. Read with enthusiasm, retell stories and discuss illustrations.
  • Find other books by your child’s favourite writers and artists.
  • Read in the language you are most comfortable with.

Bullet How long will the All Aboard for Kindergarten project last?

Literacy Trains are distributed in September. Library cards, lanyards, and cardholders will be distributed until the end of the school year, as with all associated contests and programs.
